Abstract
This paper aims to emphasize the social and economic consequences of population/ demographic decisions and changes in the past, present and future Romania. Issues such as population ageing, demographic dependency, and fertility rate decline are starting points for analysing population structure’s influence upon social protection, with a special focus on public pension system. Opportunities and problems faced by three "generations" born in three different periods while entering in various components of social protection system - education, labor market and retirement - are presented from a comparative perspective. In order to emphasize the complexity of the described issues, sub-national differences in population structure and access to social protection are analysed and huge territorial/geographical disparities between various entities within Romania are described.
